Curriculum and Instruction

At Prelude Prep, curriculum and instruction are intentionally designed to support strong academic foundations, clear progression of skills, and consistent learning experiences across grade levels.

Our approach to curriculum reflects a belief that students learn best when instruction is structured, coherent, and aligned over time. Curriculum decisions are made thoughtfully to ensure learning builds purposefully from one grade to the next.

A Thoughtful Approach to Curriculum

Curriculum at Prelude Prep is not chosen in isolation. Instructional materials and practices are selected to align with our academic goals, instructional frameworks, and the needs of our students.

We prioritize curriculum that
• Builds knowledge and skills systematically
• Supports grade level learning
• Allows teachers to teach with clarity and purpose
• Provides students with meaningful practice and application
• Aligns across classrooms and grade levels

Curriculum serves as a foundation, while instruction brings learning to life through clear routines, guided practice, and consistent expectations.

Instruction That Supports Learning

Instruction at Prelude Prep is structured, intentional, and student focused. Teachers use clear models, guided practice, and ongoing feedback to support learning.

Instruction emphasizes
• Explicit teaching of core skills
• Opportunities for practice and application
• Active engagement during learning time
• Clear expectations for effort and participation
• Support for students as they grow in independence

This approach helps students develop confidence, responsibility, and strong learning habits over time.

Literacy Instruction

Literacy instruction at Prelude Prep is guided by a clear instructional framework that outlines what students learn, how instruction is delivered, and how skills develop across grade levels.

Our literacy approach emphasizes foundational reading skills, language development, knowledge building, and writing. Instruction is designed to support students as they grow as readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers.

Families can learn more about our literacy approach by reviewing our Literacy Instructional Framework.

Mathematics Instruction

Mathematics instruction at Prelude Prep focuses on building strong conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem solving skills.

Instruction is structured and aligned to ensure students build mathematical understanding progressively across grade levels. Teachers support students in developing confidence, reasoning, and accuracy in mathematics.

A detailed mathematics instructional framework is currently in development and will reflect the same intentional design and alignment as our literacy framework.

Alignment Across Grade Levels

Curriculum and instruction at Prelude Prep are designed to align from Pre-Prep through Upper Prep. This alignment ensures students experience consistency in expectations, instructional routines, and skill development as they progress through the school.

Vertical alignment allows learning to build intentionally over time, preparing students for increasing academic demands and future success.

Partnering With Families

We believe families play an important role in supporting student learning. Prelude Prep communicates curriculum expectations clearly and provides opportunities for families to understand what students are learning and how to support growth at home.

Our instructional frameworks help ensure transparency and consistency for both families and staff.
