Lower Prep (Grades 3–5)

In Lower Prep, Prelude Prep builds on strong foundational skills and moves students into deeper academic thinking, increased independence, and more complex content. Instruction is structured, knowledge-rich, and intentionally designed to strengthen reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Lower Prep classrooms maintain clear routines and expectations while encouraging students to think critically, explain their reasoning, and take greater responsibility for their learning.


Literacy Instruction

Lower Prep literacy instruction continues with EL Education, with instructional structures that evolve to meet growing academic demands.

Students engage with complex texts, write in multiple genres, and participate in academic discussions grounded in evidence. Literacy instruction integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening with science and social studies content to build knowledge and comprehension.

Mathematics instruction in Lower Prep uses Bluebonnet Learning, aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, and emphasizes coherence, depth, and problem solving.

Instruction balances conceptual understanding with procedural fluency and helps students see how mathematical ideas connect across topics.

Math Story Problems and Mathematical Meaning

Lower Prep mathematics instruction incorporates Math for Meaning™ story problem practices  to support deep understanding and reasoning.

Students are taught to

• Explain reasoning using precise mathematical language
• Compare and refine solution strategies

Science in Lower Prep is taught by a dedicated content teacher using PhD Science, a knowledge-rich curriculum aligned to Texas standards.

Students investigate scientific phenomena through hands-on exploration, discussion, reading, and writing. Instruction emphasizes scientific reasoning, vocabulary development, and application of concepts.

Lower Prep at Prelude Prep prepares students for the academic expectations of Upper Prep by strengthening reading comprehension, writing stamina, mathematical reasoning, and content knowledge. Through intentional instruction and increasing responsibility, students build the skills and confidence needed for continued success.
