Pre-Prep

Pre-Prep at Prelude Prep is designed to help young children transition confidently into school. This program focuses on building foundational learning habits, social development, and early academic readiness in a structured, supportive environment.

Pre-Prep is a child’s first experience with school routines, expectations, and learning alongside peers. Our goal is to help students feel safe, capable, and ready to engage in learning.

A Thoughtful Start to School

Pre-Prep classrooms are calm, predictable, and intentionally designed for young learners. Children learn through a balance of guided instruction, structured routines, play-supported learning, and exploration.

Teachers provide clear expectations and consistent support, helping students learn how school works and how to participate successfully in a classroom community.

Pre-Prep supports the development of
• Listening and communication skills
• Social interaction and cooperation
• Early academic behaviors
• Classroom routines and transitions
• Curiosity and engagement

Building Independence in Pre-Prep

A key focus of Pre-Prep at Prelude Prep is helping children develop independence. Independence is a learned skill, and our program intentionally teaches students how to manage routines, make choices, and take responsibility in age-appropriate ways.

Children enter Pre-Prep with different levels of independence. Our role is to guide and support students as they learn to do things for themselves within a safe, structured, and supportive environment.

In Pre-Prep, students are taught to
• Follow classroom routines with increasing independence
• Manage personal belongings and materials
• Transition between activities with guidance
• Make simple choices during learning activities
• Communicate needs appropriately
• Attempt tasks before seeking help

Teachers model expectations, provide encouragement, and gradually release responsibility as children build confidence and skill.

Why Independence Matters

Developing independence in Pre-Prep supports learning, confidence, and school readiness. When children learn how to manage routines and tasks independently, they are better able to focus, participate, and engage in learning.

Independence also supports persistence, problem solving, and responsibility, which are essential skills for success in Kindergarten and beyond.

Learning Through Play and Structure

Pre-Prep learning experiences are play-supported and purposeful. Play is used as a tool for learning, guided by teachers and connected to clear goals.

Children engage in activities that support
• Language development and vocabulary
• Early literacy behaviors
• Early math thinking
• Fine and gross motor development
• Social and emotional growth

Play and exploration are intentionally structured so children are learning how to listen, participate, and follow expectations while exploring new ideas.

Partnering With Families

Prelude Prep partners with families to support children’s growth and development. Families play an important role in helping children build independence by encouraging age-appropriate responsibilities at home.

We believe strong partnerships between school and home support children as they grow in confidence, responsibility, and readiness for learning.

Preparing for Pre-K and Beyond

Pre-Prep at Prelude Prep provides a strong foundation for future learning. Through intentional instruction, consistent routines, and supportive guidance, children develop the skills and habits needed to succeed in Pre-K and beyond.

Our goal is to help every child feel capable, confident, and ready to learn.
